ICANN is the Internet Coporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. ICANN
is responsible for for Internet Protocol (IP) address space allocation,
protocol identifier assignment, generic (gTLD) and country code (ccTLD)
top-level domain name system management, and root server system management
functions.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is the entity that oversees
global IP address allocation, root zone management for the Domain Name
System (DNS), media types, and other Internet Protocol related assignments.
It is operated by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN).
What is DNS?
Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource
participating in the Internet. It associates various information with the
domain names assigned to each of the participants. Most importantly, it
translates domain names meaningful to humans into the numerical (binary)
identifiers associated with networking equipment for the purpose of
locating and addressing these devices world-wide.
